Otago bowler Shaun Scott (North East Valley) will start his Commonwealth Games campaign when he competes in the Hong Kong International Classic today.

Scott (47), a fencing and pavement contractor in Central Otago, will represent New Zealand in the singles, and in the pairs with Wellington's Blake Signal.

The New Zealand women's team is Amy Brenton (Nelson) and Clare McCaul (Wellington). They will both play in the singles, and together as a pair.

There are 64 players from 11 countries playing in each of the men's and women's knockout singles.

The strongest opposition for Scott will come from Barrie Lester (Australia), Mark McPeake and Graham McKee (Ireland), Robert Marshall (Scotland), Robert Newman (England) and Jacky Wong (China).

Wong has twice won the singles event and will be keen to get his third win at the weekend.

Scott first represented New Zealand in the transtasman event in Invercargill in April last year. He then contested the Asia-Pacific championships in Adelaide in November when he won a bronze medal in the triples.

This year, he played for the Black Jacks in the Six Nations event in Adelaide, when the final selection for World Bowls was made. Scott missed selection for the five-man World Bowls team that will compete in Adelaide this month.

He is ranked sixth in the country and is confident he can be part of the seven-man team that will compete at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

"It will be the start of my preparations for the Commonwealth Games," Scott said. "If I play well on heavy greens it will be a good start for my Glasgow campaign."

The greens in New Zealand normally run between 17 and 20 seconds but the heavy Scottish greens will be down to a slow nine or 10 seconds.

The greens in Hong Kong will be heavy and will test Scott's ability to be successful at the Commonwealth Games.

To prepare for the slow greens, Scott practised playing from corner to corner on local greens and on greens that had a lot of grass.

"I'm happy on the slow greens," he said. "It is just a matter of persevering. Being strong helps you to play on the heavier greens and enjoy it.

"If the heavy greens start to get you down physically it affects your mental approach."

Scott was disappointed at missing selection for World Bowls but is on the reserves list and is keeping himself fit and in form in case a member of the team gets sick or is injured.

Scott reached the semifinals of the Speight's Invitation singles at North East Valley and played in the Bowls Dunedin mixed pairs.

The Hong Kong men's and women's singles start today and the pairs will be held from November 5-12.
