Horwill best performer in Otago Welch Trophy side

Jonty Horwell (17) was the best-performed member of the Otago team that finished last in the elite Welch Trophy at the weekend.

North Taranaki retained the Welch Trophy in a closely-fought tournament in Christchurch.

North Taranaki finished the fifth session with 105.5 points, Ashburton was second on 103.5 and was followed by Counties 101.5, Upper Hutt Valley 85.5, Waikato 81.5 and Otago 62.5.

Horwell, the winner of the New Zealand junior singles title a week earlier, won six games and had one draw in his 15 games. He had one win and a draw in the fours and two wins in the pairs.

His best performance was in the singles with three wins from his five games.

He beat Jakeb White (Counties), Robert Fuge ((Upper Hutt Valley) and Rochelle Hastie (Waikato).

David Webb (36), a management accountant, had five wins and two draws. In the singles, he had three wins and a draw.

His best performance was to beat Aidan Zittersteijn (North Taranaki) in the singles. This was significant as Zittersteijn received his gold star in Christchurch for winning his fifth Welch Trophy.

North Taranaki first won the Welch Trophy in 1980 and this was its fifth title, having won it four times in the past five years.

Former Otago bowler Grant l'Ami was a member of the North Taranaki team and won his seventh Welch Trophy. He was a member of the Otago team that won the trophy in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

Otago had the youngest team at the tournament with an average age of 28 for the eight-man team.

Five members of the team were under the age of 30.

The most successful singles players were Alister Wilson (North Taranaki) with five wins from his five games and Kath Arvidson (Counties) with four wins and a draw.

Each bowler played 15 games and Wilson and Des Hawkins (Ashburton) were the best performed with 11 wins and a draw.
