This was a million miles away from the biggest global sporting event of yesterday - but no less important for those competing.

The Taieri Bowling Club had its annual over-70s tournament at its greens yesterday and there was a full house sign put up.

A total of 128 bowlers - the maximum allowed - lined up to play in three games during the day, with bowlers drawn from the six clubs around the Taieri. Players from Green Island, Taieri, Mosgiel RSA, Fairfield, Brighton and Outram competed, placed in mixed teams.

The event has been going for more than 30 years and its popularity shows no sign of abating. There were 74 men and 54 women competing. Players got three games in with a lunch in between.

And who won the event? Everyone, as, thanks to sponsors and supporters, everyone got a prize.
