The Dunedin City Council is searching for answers about its sports facilities.

The council owns 85 sports facilities in Dunedin including sports fields, parks and outdoor courts, as well as indoor venues such as Forsyth Barr Stadium and the Edgar Centre.

Dunedin City Council acting group manager parks and recreation Scott MacLean said the survey was a needs assessment.

"It is important we engage the community, including the sporting codes, to hear directly from them on their current sports facility use and what they think they might need in the future," MacLean said.

"As well as getting a better understanding of national and international sports trends, the information gathered through the survey will inform a 10 to 20-year strategic plan for our sports facilities, which will help guide future decisions on investment in sports facilities."

MacLean said sport and recreation activities were important to the health of Dunedin people so the council would like to hear about what they think the future of their activities may look like.

He said it was not brought about by anyone complaining about facilities or the lack of them.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the council had continued to see positive engagement throughout the restrictions from sports clubs.

He said it was too early to say what the results would be, whether the city had too many sports facilities or not enough.

Water sports will not be part of the review but the council will be looking at them in the future.

A plan for the future of sports facilities will be released next year.

The survey closes at the end of the month.
