And his maiden first-class century during his debut for Otago late last season made him pretty popular in Dunedin as well.
Yesterday, the diminutive right-hander was not making any friends among his former Canterbury team-mates.
Broom scored an undefeated 110 to help Otago reach 365 in its warm-up match with Canterbury at Lincoln.
Volts coach Mike Hesson was impressed with his application.
"He has been short of a good score so [yesterday] was pretty important for him," Hesson said.
"His first 28 scoring shots were singles.
"He manoeuvred the ball around nicely and then benefitted later on.
"I'm really pleased with the way he played."
Promising all-rounder Sam Wells whacked a quickfire 72 and Aaron Redmond, Neil Broom and Michael Bracewell all posted scores in the 40s.
While Hesson was disappointed some of his batsmen got out with "medium scores", he was pleased with they way they applied themselves.
Canterbury leg spinner Todd Astle was the pick of the bowlers, picking up six wickets.
Otago will field for 100 overs today and both sides will introduce new personnel and start a fresh two-day game tomorrow.
