Cricket: Honours shared on day one

Honours were shared when rain halted play on the first day of the three-day Hawke Cup challenge between holder North Otago and Otago Country yesterday.

Light rain forced players off the field at 2.29pm. Play will start at 10am this morning with the possibility of an extra hour after 6pm to make up some of the lost time.

Otago Country won the toss and captain Brendan Domigan decided to bat first on what proved to be a batsman-friendly pitch at Whitestone Contracting Stadium.

With fellow opener Peter Breen, Domigan saw off the medium pace attack of David Sewell, Dave Simpson, Richard Turner and Matt Machan and it was the duo of Ben Cant and left-arm off spinner Jordan Horrell which dragged North Otago back into the game.

Breen and Domigan had featured in an opening stand of 89 before Breen fell to a brilliant catch at fine leg by Richard Turner to be dismissed for 42.

Domigan and James Pyle added a further 30 runs before Pyle went leg before to Horrell for seven and with no addition to the score Domigan was caught behind by Sean Eathorne for 68. Jarrod Andrew and Fraser Wilson saw Otago Country through to lunch at 132 for three.

Cant's two wickets cost him 24 runs and Horrell had taken one for seven off three overs.

Only 59 minutes of play were available in the second session to leave Otago Country 177 for four with Wilson was on 18 and Cameron Rutherford on 8.

Andrew was trapped lbw by Turner for 25.
