Resuming after lunch on 62 for one, Sri Lanka lost opener Tillakaratne Dilshan for 29 and captain Kumar Sangakkara for 50 in the middle session.
Sangakkara's dismissal when he was caught by Jacob Oram provided New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori with his 300th wicket, enabling him to become only the eighth test cricketer to take 300 wickets and score 3000 runs.
Mahela Jayawardene, on 31, and Thilan Samaraweera, 15, were the not out batsmen.
Vettori had figures of two for 57 from 19 overs; seamer Iain O'Brien, with one for 28, was the other successful bowler.
