Waikoikoi won their home game against Marist by two wickets in round seven of Southland’s 50 over competition on Saturday.
Marist won the toss and elected to bat. The visitors may have been regretting that when they were four down with just 29 runs on the board.
Southland’s most accomplished batsman Shaun Fitzgibbon was the only one in the Marist top-six to reach double figures.
Jordan Goodall batted well with Fitzgibbon to form an 87-run partnership. Goodall faced 65 deliveries while scoring 28 runs.
Fitzgibbon was unbeaten on 92 when Marist’s 50 overs were up and the total on 167 for the loss of six wickets.
Liam and Ryan McFaul took two wickets each for Waikoikoi.
Opening batter Welby Reed scored 19 runs for the locals, while Ryan McFaul and Angus Simmers scored 16 runs each.
Regular wickets kept Marist in the game before a 51-run partnership between Jared McKenzie and Liam McFaul (25) helped the locals close in on the target.
McKenzie was unbeaten on 39 when locals reached victory with two wickets and six overs to spare.
With most of Southland’s best players away on Hawke Cup duty, Southland Boys’ had a chance on their home ground to beat Old Boys.
The students batted first but were bowled out for just 110 runs.
Each of the first five batters failed to reach double figures. Travis Mann got to 15 and Angus Mann 14, while Angus Burnett top scored with 43.
Ryan Acland and Sam McLachan took two wickets each for Old Boys.
Old Boys cruised past the target with nine wickets and 37 overs to spare. Opener Sahil Rana scored an unbeaten 61 from 47 balls and Liam McWilliam an unbeaten 30 off 32 balls.
The unbeaten Appleby team had the bye this week.
