Old Boys beat Appleby; Te Anau wins division one final

Southland club cricket had its premier league semifinals interrupted on Saturday, while the division one final was won by Te Anau.

Old Boys were the top qualifiers in the premier league and comfortably beat second-placed Appleby in their semifinal at Queens Park.

In a 42-over match, Appleby got off to a poor start, and Clint Goad (27) was the only top-four batter to reach double figures.

Calum Johnstone (19) was the seventh man out, leaving No 9 Sam Downing to add 33 valuable runs and bring the total to 148.

Old Boys all-rounder Chris Case took three wickets for 26 runs from his nine overs.

Openers Brayden Thomas (49) and Case (13) put on 35 runs for the first wicket for Old Boys.

Thomas and Brendan Domigan then combined for a 79-run partnership before Thomas fell with the total on 124.

Domigan was unbeaten on 61 from 60 balls when victory was achieved in the 31st over with six wickets in hand.

Appleby gets a second chance at qualifying if it can win the repechage final this Sunday against the winner of the Waikoikoi and Metropolitan semifinal.

The semifinal had to be postponed to this Saturday after some of the Waikoikoi team were unavailable with Covid.

Te Anau hosted Central Western in the division one final on Saturday and won by 12 runs.

The Waikoikoi and Metropolitan B teams have their division two final this Saturday.
