Otago keeper Polly Inglis will captain a South Island team laden with Sparks players in a T20 series against the North Island at Saxton Oval next week.

Inglis will be joined by Otago team-mates Emma Black, Anna Browning, Olivia Gain, Bella James, Louisa Kotkamp and PJ Watkins in the South Island side.

Inglis is one of 16 players with White Ferns experience who are set to take part in the annual fixtures.

The three-match series will be played from December 18-20.

It returned in 2023 after a lengthy hiatus as part of New Zealand Cricket’s commitment to provide greater playing opportunities for the country’s leading female cricketers.

The series serves as an opportunity to build depth ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup next year.

The North have won the series both times since its return and boast a team including six T20 World Cup winners in Fran Jonas, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Molly Penfold, Georgia Plimmer and Hannah Rowe.

The South will lean on Lea Tahuhu to generate some heat with the ball, and the side includes Hallyburton Johnstone leading run-scorer Kate Anderson and consistent performer Izzy Sharp.

Inglis said the South Islanders were keen to break the North Island’s recent dominance.

"They won’t be easy to beat, but we’ve got an exciting squad with lots of consistent performers from the domestic game, so I think we’ve got a good shot this year," she said.

White Ferns and Otago duo Suzie Bates (quadriceps) and Eden Carson (elbow) are ruled out with injury, as is Izzy Gaze (thumb), while Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday and Melie Kerr were assigned rest due to workload considerations during the past year. — Allied Media
