Taieri 179/5 beat Green Island 132/7 Former Black Cap and Volts batter Neil Broom helped deliver a 47-run victory for Taieri in their opening T20 game against Green Island at Sunnyvale on Thursday night. Broom, who played two tests, 39 ODIs and 11 T20s for New Zealand, blasted 50 from 32 balls to help Taieri post a formidable 179 for five. Ben Lockrose (35 from 19) and Cameron Elliott (33 not out from 19) made valuable contributions as well. Daniel Lawrence was the best of the Green Island bowlers with one for 18 from his four overs. He also did his best to carry his side with the bat. He clubbed 54 not out from 51 balls. But the Swamp Rats could not keep pace with the required rate and only managed to post 132 for seven. Lockrose (two for 27), Ben McCall (two for 23) and Ollie Shore (two for 13) shared the spoils. University-Grange 147/7 lost to North East Valley 148/3 Volts batter Llew Johnson whacked 82 off just 29 balls to help North East Valley secure a seven-wicket win against University-Grange. The heavy-hitting right-hander smashed eight sixes and six fours at the top of the order, and combined with Otago team-mate Thorn Parkes (35 from 26) in a 112-run stand for the opening partnership. University-Grange had posted a decent score of 147 for seven. Zac Cumming top-scored with 66 from 44. But with Johnson in rollicking form, the Swans knocked off the target with nearly eight overs to spare. Cumming managed to pick up two for 24 to complete a good match for the young all-rounder, while Hunter Kindley (one for 15) was the pick of the Valley bowlers. Albion 153/6 beat CDK 79 Albion pair Lahiru Vimukthi and Dylan Fletcher teamed up to roll CDK for a paltry 79 and secure a comfortable win. Vimukthi (three for 15) and Fletcher (three for 21) ripped through CDK’s batting lineup, while Tommy Clout’s two for 15 represented a very decent outing as well. Only CDK opener Xavier Chisholm was able to get into double figures. His knock of 42 from 32 deliveries stood out on a bleak score book. Nick Brown was the next highest scorer with eight from 16 balls. The Eagles did not find batting anywhere near as tough. Jamal Todd bashed 49 from 17 balls in a swashbuckling knock which included five sixes. Albion registered 153 for six. Luke Georgeson (31 off 29) and Fletcher (26 off 15) chipped in some valuable runs, while Tyler McCleery snapped up three for 26 for the Hounds.
