Cycling: Doctor 'super happy' about rider's recovery

Greg Henderson's Commonwealth Games road race mission appears to be back on.

Henderson fell during the fourth stage of the Tour De France on Wednesday, as he negotiated a roundabout with 20km to go between Le Touquet and Lille.

Henderson split open his right knee, exposing the patella and leaving a 12cm-long cut, putting his plans to compete in the road race at Glasgow in some doubt.

But he told Australian magazine Ride Cycling Review the report from his doctor after the surgery had been the best possible news.

''The doctor is super happy,'' Henderson told journalist Rob Arnold.

''He looked at it, shook my hand and said, ''it's good. It's perfect!''.

The doctor told Henderson he could start riding again at the end of next week, a week ahead of Henderson's tentative schedule immediately after the accident.

Henderson is one of six New Zealand riders named in the team for the road race. One of his team-mates, Jesse Sergent, is in top form leading into the Glasgow games.

Sergent (26) was part of a breakaway in the fifth stage of the Tour Of Austria on Thursday over the highest mountain on the tour, and pulled away with 20km to go to secure a winning break.

Sergent has won four other stage victories as a professional, but all have come in individual time trials or prologues.
