BMX riders from around New Zealand and Australia will clock up some pace during the BMXNZ South Island Titles in Alexandra this weekend.

The event, which has been two years in the planning, will take place at the revamped BMX park today and tomorrow.

Race director Taiwha Nelson was among those gearing up for the weekend’s events, which will feature categories for children aged 5 and under and up to 50-plus.

Among those competing were three generations of one family, proving age was no barrier.

‘‘It’s a family sport,’’ Nelson said.

‘‘It might start off with a child racing and then ... normally the dad sees another dad supporting their child and so they will go and get a bike.’’

Central Otago champion riders were among the line-up due to compete, including teenager Holly Oldham.

Nelson said there was no cost for the public to attend the event, which will come to an end with a prizegiving following the final race about 2.30pm tomorrow.
