All three Southern teams nab victories

Southern football teams made it three from three this weekend.

Striker Garbhan Coughlan drilled a double, the women recorded a comprehensive win and Adam Hewson collected a hat trick for the youth league team — happy days.

Southern United women backed up from a healthy 5-2 win against Waikato Bay of Plenty last week with a 8-2 win against Central in Palmerston North.

Southern took control of the game in the 5th minute when Emily Morison powered in a shot after a fast break. Central was caught napping following an attacking corner, and paid dearly.

The visitors doubled their lead through a lovely strike from Mikalya Gray in the 11th minute.

Central got back into the contest with a beautifully worked goal midway through the half.

Jendi Frank smashed the ball past the keeper following a sweeping attack.

Morison restored the two-goal buffer just before the break though. She ghosted through a gap after a defensive blunder.Southern scored twice more early in the second half to put the match out of reach for the home team.

Frank bagged a second but Southern finished strong, slotting three more.

The men had a much tighter match with Phoenix Reserves. They posted a 2-1 win at Newtown Park.Coughlan banged in both goals. His second came in the last minute to seal the win.

The striker has well and truly broken his drought. He has scored four goals in the past two games after failing to net in the opening four.Coughlan opened the scoring in the 36th minute with a looping effort.

Boyd Curry nodded in to level the score for the Phoenix Reserves early in the second half.But the defining moment came following a great run from Danny Ledwith.

Coughlan was on hand for the finish.

The Southern national youth league team claimed a 4-2 win over the Wellington Phoenix.

Hewson scored three goals and Johnny Woodall added a fourth to take the side to 12 points — three behind league leaders Auckland City — with two rounds to play.
