Trent Dickie is a smart young footballer.

When the Balclutha junior player heard he was to be coached by a former captain of the Italian women's football team, there was only one hat he was going to wear: the one with Italia on it.

Dickie was among the large group of youngsters that gathered at John McGlashan College on Saturday to be coached by travelling Fifa ambassador coaches Carolina Morace and New Zealander Michelle Cox.

The coaches praised McGlashan's superb facilities, as practical coaching sessions were run in the idyllic location.

Talks and video shows highlighted how women's football has exploded on to the world scene.

Morace's career exemplified the opportunities available.

She played for Italy when only 14 years old, scored more than 500 goals in her career, and became the the first woman to coach an Italian professional men's side.

The Fifa ambassadors tour is to promote the Under-17 Women's World Cup, which starts in Christchurch on October 29 with a match between Germany and Ghana.
