There were no fairytale results in Chatham Cup matches over the weekend. Of the 32 goals scored in six matches, the competition's minnows could only contribute two.

Teams to remain goal-less were Mornington, Old Boys, Pleasant Point and Queens Park.

The closest match was at Sunnyvale, where Luke Macris was as surprised as everyone else when a miscued early corner sneaked in at the near post to give Varsity a 1-0 lead.

Varsity looked the quicker and fitter of the two sides but Green Island, with less possession, still looked capable of scoring, and the energy of Cody Robinson opened the home side's account.

With Tim Witten-Sage standing out, Varsity used the wings well. Zac Rathbone pushed forward to combine with Dom Higgins and the hard-working Yannik Wouts scored to wrap up a 2-1 result.

Best for Green Island were the experienced trio of Dan Rutter, Liam Dungey and Robinson who never stopped running.

At Ellis Park, Roslyn-Wakari ran amuck to rack up a 10-0 win over top Invercargill side Old Boys, coached by Uruguayan Ignacio Sande.

Roslyn coach Colin Thom preferred to praise his side's performance rather than condemn the Southern opposition.

"They are the top side in Invercargill's highest grade, and are undefeated this season," Thom said.

"They also fielded five of the Spirit FC side which plays in Footballsouth's Premier league."

The coach was impressed with Roslyn's passing and composure and the finishing that netted goals for James Govan (four), Ajay Cunningham (two), Michael Cunningham, Sam Mepham, James Watson and Tim Mather.

Roslyn's man of the match was defender James Watson and, in the absence of regular keeper Peter Evans, youngster Mike Rae did not put a foot wrong.

Otago star striker Aaron Burgess enjoyed his brother, Matt, scoring for Waihopai, but once again the gap was too big as Northern cruised to a 4-1 win in a match that was marred by serious injury to Waihopai striker Chris Jones.

Grants Braes' Njoh Mpondo scored twice in the 5-0 win over Mornington, with Mitchell Jackson, Keiran Putt and Ed Grinsberg also chiming in with goals.

In Invercargill, Southend alone progressed to the next round with a 4-0 win over Queens Park, and Timaru Hearts beat Pleasant Point 5-0.
