Football: Playoff raises question of SI league

Confirmation of a South Island championship match between Caversham and Mainland's top team will add some zing to the end of the season.

The date has been decided as September 5 and Caversham has been confirmed as the southern candidate after winning the Football South Premier League title.

The Mainland championship still has three games to play.

Cashmere Technical is five points ahead of Nelson, and looking the likely northern contender for the South Island championship.

There is reported support in Canterbury for a resumption of some enlarged version of a South Island league, and while club treasurers may be wary of the travelling costs involved, especially if Nelson enters, it would clearly help bridge the gap in playing standards between local football and a national league.

Even enlarging the South Island championship to two teams each from north and south, to provide a mini league of six games, would be a purposeful start to test the financial waters.

A four-team championship was last held in 2009.

Caversham beat Western, Dunedin Technical beat Woolston on penalties, and Technical went on to beat Caversham 4-1 in the final.

There was no South Island championship in 2010.

Caversham won a two-team playoff in 2011, Ferrymead Bays won in 2012, and Cashmere Technical won in both 2013 and 2014.

Senior administration changes are taking place in both the Football South management and in Mainland, so perhaps a fresh approach will be considered to the South Island set-up, especially as New Zealand Football is considering changes to the national league after next season.

In Football South matches today, Dunedin Technical has another catch-up game against University, at Tahuna Park.

Coach Aaron Burgess will be keen to return to winning ways after a narrow Chatham Cup loss last weekend, and Technical has potentially 12 points available which could earn it a total of 46.

However, Caversham has already clinched the FPL title with at least 47 points, and its last game is next week, against Dunedin Technical at Tonga Park.

Third-placed Mosgiel plays Roslyn-Wakari at Memorial Park today, and bottom side Northern plays Green Island at Forrester Park.

There is a midweek clash between University and Dunedin Technical scheduled for 6.30pm on Tuesday at University Oval No2.

Dunedin Technical wrapped up the women's premier title with a 6-0 win over University B at Culling Park on Wednesday.

Tomorrow, the University women play Technical Maroon at Culling Park, and Roslyn-Wakari plays Queenstown Rovers at Ellis Park.
