Led by coach Hayley Stirling, the side will play its first two games against Northern federations, followed by a match against a New Zealand development team made up of players aspiring to make the national under-17 team.
The side will face a stiff test against Northern in Auckland tomorrow, before hosting Auckland at Tahuna Park next weekend.
The squad will then head back to Auckland to play the NZF development side, which is made up solely of North Island players, the following weekend.
''Northern is going to be the toughest game for us,'' Stirling said.
''A couple of Northern federations first up is always tough to open up with. Particularly with the squads they manage to assemble, with the likes of Football Ferns being available.
''But it also gives us an opportunity if they're not gelling in the first game to cause an upset or surprise them a little bit.''
Stirling is in her first season in charge of the Southerners, after being an assistant coach last year.
She is also the Football South women's development officer.
Her side included a few players from last year, a couple of new faces and a raft of local youngsters coming through the ranks, she said.
''So it's a bit of a mix of abilities and experiences, but I'm pretty confident we can cause a few upsets if we get it right on the day,'' she said.
''We've got a couple of acquisitions in the backline in Rosie Morgan and Annie Gilchrist. We have also got some pretty talented forwards in Renee Bacon and Una Madden. So we're looking to try and get some ball to them and create some problems for other teams.''
The side also includes two players - goalkeeper Tessa Nicol and left back/midfielder Sammy Murrell - who recently helped the national under-20 team qualify for the under-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea next year.
Stirling said the team had been training together since August, and was confident the group could improve on last year's winless campaign.
''This team has got the potential to take points off other teams,'' she said.
''But it's about having a group that believe in it and have the confidence to go out and do it.''
