Danny Ledwith is looking forward to getting back on the pitch today.

Indeed the whole Southern United team will be.

It is three weeks since the side’s last match — a 4-0 win over the Wellington Phoenix Reserves.

That will be sure to add some fire to the team’s performance in its final home game of the season, against Hamilton Wanderers at Sunnyvale Park.

"Big time, yeah. I think everyone’s really hungry to get back out there at the moment," the 26-year-old said.

"The two-week break, it’s hard training for nothing, so you’re training throughout the week and putting the effort in and no rewards in the weekend, getting out on to the pitch.

"So tomorrow it’ll be kind of like everyone’s let loose a little bit.

"Hopefully, we can start well and get on top early doors and go from there."

As his second season with Southern draws to a close, Ledwith feels the side has improved immensely since his arrival.

One of five Irish players to sign with the club at the beginning of last season, he brought plenty of experience with him.

That included a stint with  Sligo Rovers, during which he played in the Uefa Europa League, one step down from the Champions League.

After beating Lithuania’s FK Banga Gardzkai in the first round of qualification, the side was pipped by Norway’s Rosenborg BK in the second round.

"It was surreal, really.

"You’re playing in front of 30,000-40,000 people and we beat them away, I think it was 2-1 the final result.

"Then unfortunately they got the better of us when we came back to Ireland.

"But it was just a surreal experience, definitely a highlight."

After several years playing in the League of Ireland, during which he made 73 appearances for various clubs, the opportunity to come to Dunedin and play under coach Paul O’Reilly arose. It was something he said had been one of the best decisions he had made.

While he missed the people at home, he had not been missing too much else about Ireland. He said it was different from New Zealand, and that included the football.

While the game in Ireland was a physical one, he felt there was more of a technical and tactical emphasis in New Zealand.

That had taken an adjustment and something the side had worked on to find the best way to approach various games.

"It was hard to get used to at the start, but I think we all kind of get that a bit more now.

"You have to manage the game properly and Paul’s been a huge part of that and helped us manage the game properly this year.

"So that would be the main difference, the technical aspect over here."

Southern remains a chance  of finishing fifth on the table. However, with two games to go Ledwith said it was not looking any further ahead than today.
