So near and yet so far for futsal team

The Southern United futsal team had two wins, a loss and a draw in its games in Christchurch over the weekend but it could have been so much better.

The side went to Christchurch to play two games each against Central and Capital. It beat Central 9-3 on Saturday and 12-5 yesterday, but had a couple of tough games against Capital.

On Saturday it was  in the game the whole way, before conceding a goal in the final minute to go down 4-3 to Capital.

It was a similar story  yesterday, although the side did force a draw in  a thriller.

Playing at the early time of 9am, Southern United was up 4-3 and looked to have the game in the bag but Capital  equalised with seven seconds left. Coach Darren Hart said it was a tough way to finish the game.

But he was not too distraught, as last year the side  got just three points from its trip to the garden city while this year it had picked up seven. He said the team was a tad casual at times and needed to be more urgent, but the big win over Central  allowed the side to get all its players on the park and spread the goals around.

Matt Brazier and Reid Hulleman impressed for  Southern. Meanwhile, the Southern United youth team picked up one of its best wins in recent times, beating the previously undefeated Team Wellington 2-1 at Tahuna Park on Saturday.

The side had  its first win of the season the week before and put on a good display on Saturday to score  a deserved win.

Coach Terry Boylan said his side had a plan for the Team Wellington outfit and it played out exactly as he wanted.

The team pressed the Team Wellington attackers and did not let them have  time on the ball.It scored two goals through Victor Pekkari and Alex Cox early in the first half and managed to keep the Wellington attack at bay until the final five minutes, when Wellington scored its only goal.

The home team ran itself into the ground and, with a couple of 15-year-olds in defence, it was a mature display from the home team. The win lifts it into the middle of the table.
