Everyone loves a good old fashioned South Island rivalry.

While another big game is being played out up the road later this afternoon, Southern United have their eyes firmly set on their own clash when they host Canterbury United Pride at Logan Park today.

Southern United are in good form this season and will be keen to get another notch in the win column to push for a top two spot.

They sit fourth on the table with two wins, one draw and one loss for seven points and come in after a strong 4-1 win on the road to Petone last weekend.

Canterbury, home to several former Southern United players, are yet to win a game this season.

They have recorded two draws, against Western Springs and Phoenix Reserves, and two losses to sit ninth and come in off a 5-0 loss to Eastern Suburbs.

Petra Buyck has a tidy boot, having found the back of the net three times this season, while Southern have split their goals across the field. Defender Hannah Mackay-Wright and Emma Vane each have two goals.

If recent history is anything to go by, one team should win by a 2-1 scoreline.

Canterbury won 2-1 last year with Nicola Dominikovich’s 43rd minute goal proving to be the winner.

Southern won the 2-1 in 2023 — Abby Ranking scored the all-important second goal in the 60th minute — and also won by the same score in 2022.

In the other games, Auckland United are home to the West Coast Rangers this afternoon, while all other games have already been played.

Petone beat Central 3-0 on Wednesday night and Wellington United played Phoenix Reserves and Western Springs played Eastern Suburbs last night.
