Golf: Coastal pennant competition close between St Clair and Otago

The coastal pennant series looks set to be one of the most exciting for many years with the two heavyweight teams, St Clair and Otago A, halving three-all in the third round of the series at Balmacewen on Saturday.

St Clair holds the lead with five points and 13 games but Otago A, with three points and 7.5 games, has a game in hand against Otago B, which will be played next Saturday.

Defending champion St Clair is still in front.

Should there a be a tie at the end of the round robin, the Corstorphine golfers' game tally will put them in front.

For St Clair, Brent McEwan played at No 3, shooting 68 to beat Michael Smith on the 13th green.

Schoolboys Thomas Facer and Kayne Wardell helped Otago to a half with Facer beating St Clair No 1 Chris Snow, while Wardell beat Scott Mitchell on the 17th green.

The Taieri sextet had a convincing win over Chisholm Park to remain in second place.

Ken Shaw, Brett Kennelly and Brian Shaw all won by good margins, while Taieri No 2 Mark Andrews beat Mark Collie 8 and 7.

Andrews won eight of the front nine holes on his way to winning the one-sided contest.

North Otago had its first win of the series, beating Otago B on its home course by a 4 to 2 margin.

This was a close contest, with Thomas Forbes and Roger Gilchrist winning 2 and 1 while Gary Creedy and Paul Velenski finished ahead on the final green.

Creedy beat his masters (over-40) fellow triallist Murray Edgar in a close contest while Tyrone Ratahi (No 1) and Chris Billington (No 3) posted wins for Otago B by large margins.
