Golf: Michael Campbell nosedives at Masters

New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell recorded his highest-ever score at the US Masters today with an eight over par 80.

Campbell's round included eight bogeys, three coming in succession from the fourth hole.

It was his highest-ever score in 17 rounds of the US Masters and also two shots more than his previous worst, a 78 he recorded on the first day in 2001, and also in the opening round two years later.

Aside the Augusta debutants in the field, Campbell teed-up with the poorest US Masters record of all 96 competitors.

Apart from a complete turnaround in scoring on day two, the former US Open winner is set to drive out the Augusta front gates on Friday having missed the cut in all nine appearances.

Campbell began his round with a bogey but then dropped further shots at the fourth, fifth and sixth holes to drop to four over par.

He then bogeyed the par four ninth hole and dropped to six over par with a bogey at the 10th before dropping further shots at the 14th and final holes.

Finishing ahead of Campbell on day one was former Augusta National winners Fuzzy Zoeller and Raymond Floyd who each carded 79s.

And Gary Player, competing in his 52nd and final US Masters, signed off for a 78.
