Brent McEwan (St Clair) is the runaway winner of the Golf Otago order of merit.

McEwan claimed the title, along with a voucher for $1500 to be used for tournament travel and equipment next year, with 142.3 points.

He finished well clear of his nearest rival, Duncan Croudis (Otago), who scored 87.9 points from the major events during the season.

Golf Otago is giving a total of $5000 in vouchers to the top five: Croudis will receive $1250, Michael Smith (Otago) $1000, Chris Snow (St Clair) $750 and Balmacewen greenkeeper Tyrone Ratahi $500.

This is the first year the event has been held and the interest has been such that it will continue in 2011.

Smith, the Sport Otago golf development manager, was delighted with the innovation and the commitment of Otago's senior players.

"One thing we lack is the opportunity to play in many of the top tournaments, which are mainly in the North Island," he said.

The money will assist Otago's top golfers to compete against New Zealand's best in more of these events.
