A golfing mission which has taken Jamie Patton and Michael Goldstein around the world is approaching its closing stretch as they contemplate a 17-day countdown towards achieving a goal of a lifetime.

The pair ticked off the Wanaka Golf Club on Tuesday, and were heading to The Hills yesterday, as part of their year-long odyssey to play a different golf course every day.

They were joined by Golf Otago representatives Simon Hillyer and Mitch Bosley, who were able to offer some home links advice, as Patton and Goldstein look ahead to a week of Otago and Southland's best courses.

During their trip they have "raced the sun": teeing off in Glasgow one morning, racing to catch a flight to Dubai to play a round at two minutes before midnight, and then boarding an 11-hour flight to play in Perth, Australia.

They have endured broken-down cars, thunder and lightning storms, which meant they had to shelve games, and they've also had to sneak on to the odd course to ensure they maintained their round-per-day schedule.

Now, with only 17 days to go until they hole their final putts at the exclusive Cape Kidnappers course in Hawkes Bay, the pair are slowly adjusting to the concept of what life will be like afterwards.

"I don't know what the real world will involve once we're done. I'm looking forward to a break with friends and family," Goldstein said.

The pair set off on their "Pure Golf" adventure on January 1 and are raising funds for charity organisation The First Tee New Zealand.

The organisation is dedicated to helping young New Zealanders further themselves through the game of golf, by promoting educational programmes, life-enhancing values and character-building initiatives.

Patton and Goldstein have recently returned from travelling across North America, where they played at their nominated best course, Cypress Point in South Carolina.

The trip opened their eyes to the different golf ethos of the New Zealand "can do" attitude compared with an American outlook.

"Everything is a whole lot more relaxed here. The Americans, I don't think they could quite get their head around the concept of playing a different golf course every day," Goldstein said.

"[The game] is so exclusive over there . . . whereas for us, we just woke up and thought let's play golf every day for the next year. You could pretty much just go out and do that on New Zealand golf courses alone."

The former Wellington-based corporate lawyers had an early taste of southern golfing when they visited the region during the New Zealand Open in March to play at Millbrook, Jacks Point, Kelvin Heights, Arrowtown and Tarras.

Patton said while it was tempting to think about "what comes next" - he is contemplating a job opportunity in Wellington - but they needed to remain focused on their "mission" of raising funds for The First Tee.
