The Otago masters (over 40) men’s team had a resounding victory in the quadrangular tournament which was played over three rounds on Chisholm Links during the weekend.

The Otago octet had three wins with an impressive 18.5 game tally, well ahead of Southland with two wins and 12 games.

Both Otago and Southland went into the final round with two wins but the "final" was one-way traffic with six wins and two halves starving Southland of any wins.

The win was timely as the Otago team is now buoyed up for the national tournament which will be held at Chisholm at the start of next month.

Otago’s success came from some strong individual performances and half the team won all three matches.

Simon Boland, Stephen Hitchcox, Steve Horn and Peter Rae all emerged with three wins, a feat not achieved by any other players.

Jonathan Stieller (Canterbury) was unbeaten with two wins and a half, while veteran Southlander Paul Adams had a win and two halves.

The links land course had previously caused some concern but is now on target to be in good condition for the national tournament.

The 24 masters players had green fairways and ideal conditions for the event and the strong winds which can make scoring at Chisholm Links difficult were absent.

After their successful outing the eight Otago players will now have an anxious wait for the naming of the five players and reserve to compete in the national event.
