St. Hilda's and Momona A battled out a 1-1 draw in premier women's hockey at the weekend.

Momona scored early through Sam Dalziel, and then upped the pressure, putting balls into the circle and trying to capitalise on its lead.

A brilliant save by goalie Ginny Wilson kept St Hilda's in the game, and then, with a sudden switch from defence to attack, St Hilda's sped the ball through the midfield and Emma Spratt sent it well into the circle, the goal being clinched by Imogen Weir, to put the teams equal.

The runaway goal upped the ante and Momona began working hard to establish its V patterns through the centre.

In the second half, Momona resumed playing nice patterns down the left and a bit of stick-throwing and aggravation spiced up the game.

Lots of lovely long balls were sent through by the schoolgirl backs and increasingly they seemed to have the better of the game.

Momona went looking to score, but struck great goal defending by St Hilda's, and a Momona penalty corner was snatched by a swift St Hilda's runner.

The pupils showed a very capable and strong defence, with every player able to do the basics - trap and hit reliably - which is not always the case with premier players.

Amelia Weir also played well for St Hilda's, while Philippa Tuaine looked good for Momona.

In other games, Taieri beat City Highlanders White 2-1, and University beat Momona B 6-0.

In men's hockey, Kings United thrashed City Highlanders 10-0 on Saturday night.

Todd Gould was again instrumental for Kings as his deft touches and powerful reverse stick shots netted five goals.

It took just two minutes for Kings to get on the scorecard as Gould and Courtney Keep set about terrorising the City defence.

Gould was given time and space on two occasions in the first five minutes in front of goal and both were converted.

Keep also got in on the action, dispatching a loose ball at the top of the circle into the goal.

City kept the Kings defence guessing on occasions through young striker Jeremy Morris, who came close twice but was unable to convert.

Quarter of the way through the half, Morgan McLean finished off a Nick Dalziel rebound, and heading into halftime Gould set Dalziel up with a well-timed pass around a hapless Scott Stevenson to make it 6-0 at the break.

Kings picked up where it left off, as a poor clearance by the City defence gave the ball straight to James Nation, who set Gould up again for one of his signature reverse-stick shots.

Seamus Maher and Gould then scored in quick succession, as City reeled and started showing signs of frustration.

Gould and McLean each scored again as the game drew to a close.

In other games, Albany A beat the Tuataras 11-1, and University A had a narrow 2-1 escape against University B.
