Hockey: Students prevail in fast, furious match

University A beat Momona A 2-1 in a fierce contest this weekend in the premier women's competition.

The game began at pace with University passing well across the midfield and Momona running fast up front.

Momona was a little loose in its passing which led to a turnover in the midfield and free hit to the students outside their circle.

However, within seconds Momona turned it over and carried the ball back down into the University half to win a penalty corner.

A return attack from the breakout of the penalty corner resulted in a strong cross that was clinched by Anna McConachy to give University the first goal.

Momona's Holly-May Taylor fought back furiously but her hard hits were just too hard for her own team-mates to connect with.

University was quick to shoot in its attacking circle and began to dominate which led to the inevitable - a deflection goal from a ball into the circle by Kirsty Sclater to put the University women up 2-0 by the break.

The second half saw Momona upping its game with some good saves by its goalie but it still was let down by its trapping.

Both teams were trying to use their full field.

A final passing move by Momona won it a penalty corner which was sharp and simply executed with Philippa Tuaine striking it in.

In other games: City Highlanders beat St Hilda's 3-1 and Taieri beat Momona B 5-2.

In the men's competition, Albany A played University B on Saturday night, with Albany winning 5-3. On paper, the game was something of a forgone conclusion, with Albany in second place, 10 points clear of Uni which was in fourth.

Albany, however, was missing all its young guns, who were away on rep duty, and only managed to field ten players.

Despite this, Albany was quickly on the board through Matt West connecting with Rod Rzepecky's cross to beat Sam French.

University then lost Tom Paterson to an unfortunate accident which saw Paterson leave the field minus a tooth after coping a ball in the face.

Thirteen minutes in, Jason Dungey extended Albany's lead through a well-taken penalty corner.

Dave Ross added another soon after.

University fought hard in the second half, having more possession and chances at goal than Albany, but was unable to convert.

Andrew Scotts got University off to the best imaginable start, slotting a goal with only 35 seconds on the clock.

Eight minutes later, Callum Bailey dribbled through six tackles in the University circle and scored.

Stefan Fairbrother then brought the momentum back for University, using the time and space that the Albany defence gave him and put the ball past Miles Roberts.

Albany veteran Matt Rooney responded with a brilliantly struck ball from the top of the circle into the top corner, and Will Fairgray slotted one at the other end for University to make the final score 5-3 to Albany.

City Highlanders continued their impressive run, beating the Tuataras 8-0, and University A dispatched Kings A 2-1.
