Alpiners striker Sam Lane banged in five goals to help his side seal a 5-3 win against the Tridents in Auckland yesterday.

The result capped a good weekend for the South Island-based men’s team.

They dispatched the Mavericks 4-1 in Hamilton on Saturday and are undefeated after three rounds in the Premier Hockey League.

Lane was in a class of his own. The Black Sticks forward got the scoring rolling with a dragflick from a penalty corner in the fifth minute.

The Tridents struck back through Luke Holmes. He swung the ball in from a penalty corner late in the period to level the score.

Aiden Fraser converted a penalty stroke early in the second period to give the home side a 2-1 lead.

But Lane got the defending champions back in front. The Alpiners pounced on a mistake at the back and Lane provided the clinical finish. He popped in the field conversion as well.

James Stables deflected in a cross to tie the scores up again before the halftime break.

But Lane was not done.

The Tridents could not deal with an overhead pass and Lane swooped, drilling his fourth.

He sent the goalie the wrong way to calmly slot the field conversion and complete a five-goal bag.

The Alpiners men scored three goals in three minutes to set up the win against the Mavericks.

The opening half was scoreless. But the dangerous Patrick Ward slammed a shot into the corner with a wonderful strike.

The field conversion was pushed wide, but the Alpiners rapidly added two more to their tally.

Finn Ward thumped in a shot and George Baker deflected it past the goalie. He executed the field conversion to make it 3-0.

Jordan Whittleston pinned one back for the Mavericks, following a goalmouth scramble.

But Finn Ward sealed the win with a nice move along the base of the circle and finished with a crisp shot.

The back-to-back wins mean the Alpiners extend their lead at the top of the standings.

The Alpiners women’s side lost both matches.

They were defeated 3-0 by the Mavericks in Hamilton on Saturday.

Deanna Ritchie pounced on a deflection and slapped the shot past the goalie. She added the conversion to give her side a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Midway through the third period, Ruby Baker intercepted the ball, charged upfield on a 60m run and flicked the ball inside to Lucy Russ, who pushed the shot into the back of the net.

And yesterday the Tridents secured a 2-0 win against the Alpiners thanks to Liz Thompson, who scored late in the final quarter and added the extra.
