Ice hockey: Stampede not taking lowly Admirals lightly

Although buoyed by good performances against the Ice Blacks two weeks ago, Southern Stampede captain Simon Glass says his team will not be taking its struggling opponent lightly this weekend.

The Stampede had a win and a loss against the national side during the break in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League.

The Queenstown-based side is in Auckland this weekend to play the Admirals, who have not won a game this season.

Glass said the doubleheader was ''pretty important'' for the Stampede, which is only six points behind the two teams tied for first in the league.

The Admirals might be winless but Glass said they gave the Stampede a workout at the beginning of June - with the second match of the doubleheader ending 6-5 to the Stampede.

''They are playing at home and they have limited games left so we will be taking these games very seriously.''

Glass said if the Stampede won both this weekend's games, it would put them ''right in the mix''.

''It's very, very tight between the top four teams.''

Three Stampede players will be missing due to suspensions picked up during the Canterbury Red Devils and Botany Swarm games at the end of last month.

Despite the pressure to win, Glass said the team would be taking a more relaxed approach, which worked out well during the home exhibition games against the Ice Blacks during the Queenstown Winter Festival.

The Dunedin Thunder has the bye.
