Motorsport: Hill climb to resume after gap of four years

After a four-year hiatus, the Otago Sports Car Club's most popular event, the Three Mile Hill hill climb, will return this Sunday.

Club president Chris Adams is expecting about 40 entries, with competitors from Christchurch to Invercargill trying their luck over four runs. The first car is due to start at 10.15am.

The event, part of the OSCC's speed championship and the last round of the two-wheel drive sealed speed championship, has been on hold while repairs to Three Mile Hill Rd were carried out.

"The road conditions weren't up to it but after extensive work the road is in great condition to run it," Adams said.

Club speed convener Ross Cameron picked three local drivers to be at the competition's forefront. Mitsubishi Evo drivers Glenn Frew (Outram) and Mike Wellington (Dunedin) will be battling it out for 4WD honours, while Chris Hey (Mosgiel) is always quick in his 2WD Toyota MR2.

Although the just-under 3km stretch of road between Silverstream Valley Rd and Halfway Bush Rd will be closed from 9am to 4pm, spectators can make their way in from the event's start at the bottom of the hill, between runs.

"There's heaps of good viewing spots. You can get up on the banks and it's safe," Adams said.

The OSCC was grateful for the support of the local residents, who allowed the hill climb to take place, he added.
