Motorsport: Not too late to enter Whare Flat Rallysprint

In typical southern style, Otago drivers are leaving it to the last minute to get their entries in for the Otago Sports Car Club's Whare Flat Rallysprint, near Dunedin, tomorrow.

Club captain and committee member Steven Thompson said it looked like there would be up to 30 entrants for the 6.5km event, although because the club would prefer that number was closer to 50, it will accept entries at the 9.30am scrutineering and documentation on the day.

Run on Longridge Rd and Whare Flat Rd, the rallysprint will feature both fast-flowing and twisty sections, uphill and downhill.

It will take place from 11am to about 4pm and the fastest of four timed runs will decide the winner.

The frontrunners are likely to be Balclutha's Dean Bond in his Mitsubishi Evo 6.5 and Gore's Derek Ayson in his 2WD Ford Escort. Dunedin's Mark Laughton (Hillman Avenger V8) and Mosgiel's Chris Hey (Toyota MR2 turbo) will be hot on their heels.

Thompson said many competitors would be familiar with the Whare Flat Rd section, which is often used in the Otago Rally but run uphill and not downhill as it will be for Saturday's event.

Spectators can watch from the Bull Ring at the Pineapple Track car park on Flagstaff-Whare Flat Rd, which is the mid-point for the sprint. Entry details are on the Otago Sports Car Club's website.
