Balclutha driver Dean Bond battled with malfunctioning brakes and a sick co driver to win his third Catlins Coast Rally on Saturday.

His previous victories were achieved in 2009 and 2011, with his third win far from easy as his Mitsubishi Evo 6.5 lost its brakes near the end of the opening stage.

''The pedal was going right to the floor,'' Bond said.

He still managed to record the fastest time but even after a brake pad change at service, the problem kept recurring, allowing Christchurch driver Deane Buist to take the lead in a Ford Escort.

Bond's problem was eventually traced to a brake bleeder which was not fitted properly and once rectified he regained the lead on stage four.

He then extended the margin throughout the remaining five stages to win by 49.4sec from Buist and co driver Stewart Robbie, of Invercargill.

Gore driver Derek Ayson found the mechanical reliability he has been missing in recent major events and he and co driver Gavin McDermott were third in their Nissan powered Escort.

Conditions were difficult, with snow affecting some of the later stages, and Bond admitted to being ''shattered' at the end due to the extra concentration required on the slippery roads. Compounding his problems, co driver Allison Glover, of Dunedin, was carsick throughout the day.

Bond was left wondering if he was a ''bit of a rough driver'' as his sister, Tania Bond, who co drove for him last year, was also sick.

Buist's second place gave him two wheel drive honours. Christchurch driver David Clearwater finished fourth overall in his Mitsubishi Evo 4 with Richard Bateman, of Blenheim, fifth in a Mitsubishi and Scott Simpson of Oamaru (Evo 8) sixth.

Balclutha's Barry Mills and Mark Allington were seventh in their Hillman Avenger and Wallacetown husband and wife, Neville and Hannah Krammer, were eighth. The top 10 was rounded out by Jason Clark, of Havelock, in a Mitsubishi Evo 5 (ninth) and Invercargill's Vaughan Edie, 10th in his Evo 8 in an impressive return to rallying.

Attrition was high with several top prospects failing to finish. Third seed Mike Verdoner, of Balclutha, crashed off the road in stage two, badly damaging his Ford Escort, while fifth seed Regan Ross (Kaikoura) withdrew when his Escort's engine blew.

Bateman won class D, Clearwater won class E, Mills won class G, and Winton's Brendon Mitchell won class F in his Datsun 1600 car.

Jake Thomas won the competitive class B in his Corolla DX and fellow Mosgiel driver Steven Thompson won class A in a Datsun Sunny. Highlands Motorsport Park owner Tony Quinn won class C in a Toyota 86.

Mills and Allington won the Kerry O'Donohue Memorial Trophy for the first South Otago crew to finish, and Thomas and partner/co driver Cassidy Solomon were the first Otago Sports Car Club crew home in 15th place to claim the Glen Shirlaw Memorial Trophy.
