Grason Veitch has claimed another national title and may have even bigger things in sight.
The 15-year-old won the supercross national championship in Winton at the weekend and is now preparing to head to his first camp with the national junior squad.
With four national junior titles and two New Zealand grands prix already to his name, it was his seventh national title, although his first in supercross.
Having competed across two weekends in Tokoroa and Winton, he achieved three first places, two seconds and a third.
That enabled him to win the junior 125-250cc class with 109 points, beating second-placed Marshall Phillips on 95.
After finishing third last year, Veitch was happy with the result, having not been certain of how he would go coming into it.
``He was a bit unsure [whether he would win] because we don't do a lot of supercross. It's the only time we do it,'' Veitch's father, Dean, said.
``It's something we never ride because it's a once-a-year thing, whereas motocross you do it all year round.
``They are trying to promote supercross in New Zealand, get more of it happening throughout the country.''
Supercross differs from motocross in that its tracks are condensed in a small area with many jumps and obstacles.
Much ground can be made with technique and speed through various sections depending on the rider's ability.
Veitch is now preparing to head to Rotorua next week, where he will have his first training camp with the New Zealand junior squad.
That squad comprises 15 riders aged from 8 to 16, five each in the 65cc, 85cc and 125cc classes.
They will train with Ben Townley and Josh Coppins once a month through to August next year, when the world championships will be held in Victoria, Australia.
Dean said it would be a big deal to train with two top motocross riders.
``Yeah, absolutely. It's a pretty big thing to be selected too. I believe it's a pretty good opportunity.''
He was unsure whether all the riders would be taken to the world championships or a selection would be chosen from the squad.
