Netball: Games away no blow for Bredin

Dunedin whistle-blower Jono Bredin hopes an umpiring stint in Samoa, the Caribbean and the Cook Islands will net him more than just a tan.

The 24-year-old tax consultant wants to return from the dream assignment with the go-ahead to officiate in top international matches.

Bredin will switch the grey skies of Dunedin for sunnier ones in Samoa next week when he umpires in the inaugural South Pacific series.

In July he will be in Trinidad and Tobago at the Caribbean Games, and in August it's Rarotonga for the world youth netball championships.

"It's going to be fantastic," Bredin said.

"Not just the warmth but the different styles of netball. That's where I'll learn the most as an official, because you don't get to go to [places like] the Caribbean much in your umpiring life."

Bredin officiated in four ANZ Championships games last year but was overlooked this season.

Others, he said, were deemed more worthy of appointment.

"It was disappointing, but that has opened up other opportunities. If I was involved in ANZ champs I wouldn't be able to flitter around the world for a couple of months.

"I just have to make the most of [the opportunities] I'm given, and who knows what will happen?"If he makes a good job of controlling the games while he is away, Bredin hopes to be rewarded with the opportunity to officiate in top internationals.

Bredin grew up in Gore and was encouraged by international umpires Alison Cormack, Bobbi Brown and Colleen Bond to pursue his goal.

He has always had a passion for officiating and organised and refereed a rugby tournament while he was still at primary school.
