The Magic, beaten by the NSW Swifts in last year's final, were downed 22-15 by the Australian Institute of Sport team.
The Swifts earlier put on a slick display, to down AIS 23-17.
In their second match of the night, the Swifts found it tough going against a new look Firebirds line-up early on, however a perfect night out for Cath Cox saw them triumph 31-25.
NSW Swifts coach, Julie Fitzgerald although pleased to win both matches, pointed out that there was still a lot of improvement left in her team.
"We were a bit all over the place tonight. We lacked a lot of control and the ability to steady at crucial times throughout both matches," Fitzgerald said.
