Netball: Vixens too strong for struggling Tactix

A speedy start and a strong finish saw the Melbourne Vixens destroy the Canterbury Tactix 65-50 in their trans-Tasman netball league match in Melbourne today.

Vixens shooters Sharelle McMahon and Kate Beveridge were in sublime form, shooting with 87 percent accuracy as the 2009 champions dominated from the first whistle.

Coupled with a strong midcourt, and some outstanding circle defence work, they proved too strong all-round for a Tactix team still struggling for consistency.

The Christchurch-based franchise were punished in the opening spell for a slow start and static play, as the Vixens' through-court ball speed and fluid circle movement saw them out to a 17-10 lead after 15 minutes.

The Tactix's usually effective zone defence had little time to set, and the Vixens' midcourt pairing of Chelsey Tregear and Madison Browne made the most of the extra space and time.

Vixens' goal attack McMahon benefitted in particular, sinking 12 of the 13 attempts she put up in the first quarter.

With the Tactix midcourt defence half a pace behind the Vixens' attack, circle defenders Kasey Evering and Anna Galvan struggled to rein in the slick McMahon-Beveridge shooting combination.

Tactix coach Helen Mahon-Stroud brought on 20-year-old goal keeper Joanna Trip for Evering at the beginning of the second quarter, and the Tactix worked harder at closing down the Vixens' through-court flow to trail 31-23 at halftime.

Finau Pulu replaced Anna Galvan at goal defence for the third quarter, but the Vixens played a canny game, mixing speed with patience to convert turnover possession into points on the board.

The Australians went into the three-quarter break 45-35 ahead, allowing coach Julie Hoornweg the luxury of testing different combinations in the final 15 minutes.

The Tactix wilted as the game drew to a close, the Vixens taking the quarter 15-10 and the game 65-50.

Donna Wilkins was in excellent form for the Tactix, turning in a typically gritty performance first at goal shoot, then at goal attack in the final quarter.

Her on-going battle with Vixens goalkeeper Bianca Chatfield was an absorbing one, but the former Silver Fern's usually impressive accuracy rate slipped to 80 percent for the match.

The embattled Tactix are now entrenched at the bottom of the table without a win, while the Vixens have eased into the top four, their superior goal difference pushing the Mystics into fifth.
