Steel coach laments: ‘It feels a bit odd’

Southern Steel coach Reinga Bloxham could not help but feel the season came full circle yesterday.

The side began its ANZ Premiership campaign in Dunedin with a match played in front of no fans after a late shift to Covid-19 Alert Level 2.

Now it has finished its round-robin in similar fashion — a sudden shift back to Alert Level 2 before a match in Dunedin.

This time that match, scheduled for Sunday against the Mainland Tactix, has been cancelled.

The result will be recorded as a draw, as will all ANZ Premiership matches scheduled for this round.

For the Steel it was a tough way to finish the round-robin and one which had left it with a strange feeling.

"It’s a little bit of a weird feeling to be real," Bloxham said.

"There is a lot of different emotions, but one way to describe it, one of the girls said it’s surreal.

"It’s like we’re in a movie and this is a sequel.

"It is a bit of a strange one. A little bit it takes you right back to when we went to lockdown that first time and thinking around what’s going to happen."

The side was disappointed not to play in front of its Dunedin fans, having been looking forward to its home games.

Despite that, Bloxham said it was "probably the best decision".

She said it was better for the team to have the decision made now, rather than having to wait.

It was too early to make a decision as to what would happen with next weekend’s finals series.

Invercargill had been scheduled to host playoff matches next Sunday, including the grand final between the Central Pulse and Mainland Tactix.

The Steel will play the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the playoff of the bottom two teams.

Even if there were no crowds, Bloxham hoped those games could be played.

"To be able to hold the games would be good for all the teams, just to wind the season up.

"It has been a strange season.

"To be left in limbo would feel a little bit odd — it feels a bit odd now.

"In my head it makes sense that we try to get those games played."

Netball New Zealand said ticket purchasers for all cancelled games will be contacted by the relevant ticket agency to activate the refund process.
