New Zealand single sculler Emma Twigg has failed to qualify for her Olympic rowing final.

Twigg missed out in heartbreaking fashion, pipped on the finish line for third place by Poland's Julia Michalska. The top three qualify automatically for Saturday's final.

Twigg, 21, sat comfortably in third place for most of the race but couldn't withstand a powerful surge from the Polish world under-23 champion who just scraped past her in the final 100m. The time difference between them was 0.05 seconds.

The result means New Zealand won't have all eight of their crews competing in the final session.

The race was won by gold medal favourite Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus from Bulgarian Rumyana Neykova.

Twigg was the first of five New Zealand crews in action today, all needing top-three finishes to qualify for Saturday.
