Future New Zealand badminton star Asher Richardson is getting used to life in the fast lane.

He won three titles at the South Island championships in Dunedin yesterday then last night flew to Auckland for a major weekend tournament.

Next week he will represent the New Zealand under-19 team in the week-long Pan Pacific championships in Ballarat, Australia.

He played for the New Zealand team in the corresponding event in Auckland last year.

His best performance in the international arena was winning the Australian and New Zealand under-17 singles title in Ballarat in April.

Richardson (16), a pupil at Burnside High School in Christchurch, has been playing badminton for five years and has the potential to make his mark in the international arena.

He is coached by Alfred Wong in Christchurch and is ranked top in his age group in the country.

Richardson models his game on that of world No 1 Lee Choengwei (Malaysia).

His long-term goal is to make the New Zealand senior team and play in major overseas tournaments.

He beat Joseph Timms (Marlborough) 21-16, 21-17 in the under-17 boys singles final yesterday.

Richardson is 1.91m tall and his long arms and legs enable him to reach across the court.

He played all the shots yesterday and showed particular skill with the soft shot over the net, the lob to the back of the court and the smash.

He also played angled shots that were difficult to return.

Timms (14), another player of promise, also played some skilful shots to ensure the final was not one-sided.

Richardson played with fellow Cantabrian Amy-Rose Pfeifer in the under-17 mixed doubles and they beat Timms and Katrina Koster (Marlborough) 21-16, 21-11.

He gained his third title in the under-17 boys doubles, teaming with Edward Wang to beat Timms and Otago's Luke White.
