Boardsailing: Kendall makes history as life member

Boardsailing legend Barbara Kendall has been made a life member of Yachting New Zealand in recognition of her contribution to the sport.

The five-time Olympian, who won gold, silver and bronze, retired earlier this year, ending a career which spanned almost 25 years.

The 43-year-old, who was inducted into yachting's Hall of Fame in 2007, also won eight medals at world championship level.

A four-time New Zealand sportswoman of the year, Kendall will be the first woman granted life member status - and the youngest ever recipient -- when a ceremony is held in Auckland on November 28.

Ralph Roberts, a former New Zealand Yachting Federation president who competed at the 1960 and 1968 Olympics, will also join a select group of 13 in recognition of his long service.

At Los Angeles in 1984 Roberts was the New Zealand Olympic sailing contingent's section manager' eight years later in Barcelona he was the New Zealand team's chef de mission.
