The awards recognised New Zealand sporting excellence from December 1, 2019 to November 30, 2021, a two-year period reflecting the impact of Covid-19 on global sporting competitions.
Carrington, who claimed three gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, was earlier also named the New Zealand sportswoman of the year.
Dame Sophie Pascoe won the para athlete/team of the year award in recognition of her haul of two gold, a silver and bronze medal at the Tokyo Paralympics.
It is the seventh time she has won the category.
The Black Caps were named the team of the year for winning the 2021 ICC World Test Championship and becoming the world No1-ranked ODI team.
Their captain, Kane Williamson, won the sportsman of the year title.
Gordon Walker was named coach of the year for the fourth time after guiding the women’s canoe sprint team to three golds in Tokyo.
Dunedin’s Erika Fairweather received the emerging talent award after her outstanding Olympic debut in the pool at Tokyo, where, aged 17, she placed eighth in the freestyle final.
Kereyn Smith received the leadership award for her role as chief executive and secretary general of the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

Comments
Williamson is a weird one — he only played 4 tests in 2021, appeared in no ODIs at all, and had a mediocre record in T20. Bond should have been a clear winner, given that what he achieved was like Carrington switching to slalom canoeing and emerging victorious. The Halberg Committee can apparently count but not measure.
