It has taken a long time but Ann Sharp has finally joined Dad and Dave as New Zealand representatives.

Her father, Archie McQuarrie, played football for New Zealand in the 1940s.

Dave Sharp, her husband, was a New Zealand basketball representative in 1965-66.

Ann Sharp (62) has been named in the New Zealand golf croquet team for the world championships in Melbourne from November 21-29.

"I was thrilled when I heard the news," Sharp said. "It's the highest point in my croquet career. I didn't expect it at my age. "It makes it special for me to join Dad and Dave. I'm stoked."

She played basketball for Otago in her youth, but thought her chances of representing New Zealand in sport had passed when she retired from the game.

She started playing the long version of croquet nine years ago in 2000 and tried the shorter version of the game a year later and liked it.

She quickly established her credentials in the sport by winning two Otago croquet titles and was invited to a New Zealand women's invitation tournament in Nelson.

Sharp made her mark at the national level two years ago when she won the New Zealand Veterans golf croquet title.

This performance saw her named in the New Zealand training squad of 15 and she impressed the selectors during a training camp in Napier two months ago and has been named in the New Zealand team of 11 for the world championships.

She is the only representative from Otago in the team.

Sharp left Dunedin yesterday and will spend a month training in warm conditions on the Gold Coast for the world championships.

A traditional game of croquet normally takes up to a maximum of three hours to complete.

Golf croquet is the shortened version of the game and can be completed between 30min to an hour.
