Curling: Dunedin team takes title

Charlie McLeod's Dunedin team won the De Pape-Frauenlob Trophy at theAuckland Open Bonspiel last weekend.

The Dunedin team of McLeod, Dan Mustapic, Sam Inder, and Ash Beattie beat Auckland's Team Bauer 8-5 in a see-sawing final.

Dunedin had finished third two years ago and was determined to claim the trophy last weekend.

Both teams won their three pool games in the eight-team competition that included the Central Otago combination of John Sanders, Jess Buchanan, Robert Rutherford and John Allen.

The Dunedin team, which started more aggressively in the final, led 5-0 after three ends and looked to have the game in its grasp.

But Team Bauer (Alex Bauer, Nick Lambert, Katie Bauer, Fred Bauer, Anne Huddleston) rallied with a couple of good steals to tie the match at 5-5 after six ends.

Dunedin scored two shots on the next end to lead 7-5, but was without the hammer (last stone) on the eighth and final end.

Dunedin crowded the house and Bauer's effort to nudge out the shot stone fell short and Dunedin won the trophy.
