Columba College pupil Drew Schievink has continued his practice of winning gold medals in Australia.

At the Australian age-group championships in Adelaide last month, Schievink (11) won gold medals in his age-group in the 1m (187.45 points) and 3m (176.55 points) in the springboard events. They were both personal-best scores.

He also finished third in the under-11 boys platform and was second in the boys 13 and under 3m synchronised dive when he teamed with Aucklander Nathan Brown.

It was the second time Schievink had competed in Australia. Last year he won the boys under-11 1m springboard title at the Australian schools championships and was fourth in the platform.

"I felt very proud standing on the podium with the Australians," Schievink said.

"I enjoy winning medals, getting fitter and going on trips."

Schievink and St Hilda's pupil Genevieve Devereux (16) were members of the seven-strong New Zealand team that competed in the championships.

Devereux's best result was to finish eighth in the 3m synchronised event with Michaela Roberts (Auckland).

A feature of the trip was training at the new Marion Aquatic Centre in Adelaide.

The centre has a purpose-built dryland training gymnasium which has six dry boards, a 3m platform with foam pit, ground trampolines, harnesses and sprung floor.

"The opportunity to train in such a great facility was a highlight of the trip for the divers, as we have no such facility in Dunedin," coach Trudy Schievink said.

"I had the privilege to attend a Diving Australia coaches workshop in the new dryland training gym."

She was pleased by the form of her son.

"Drew's training prior to the competition was to focus on executing the fundamental basics well, resulting in a very good and consistent performance in Adelaide," she said.

"I was pleased with his quality of diving and his results. It has been a great experience for him."

The immediate focus for Drew is to concentrate on the fundamental skills and develop new dives for his next competition as a member of the New Zealand team at the transtasman schools event in Sydney in July.

Trudy Schievink (nee Lisk) represented New Zealand in rhythmic gymnastics and competed at the World Games in Munich in 1981 and Strasbourg in 1983.
