Local surfers were among the winners at South Island Championships over the weekend.

The event concluded at St Clair Beach yesterday, wrapping up four days of elite surfing in Dunedin.

Dunedin’s Luke Murphy claimed the men’s over-40 title with a score of 10.63 in the final.

He was followed in by fellow Dunedin surfer Lyndon Fairbairn, who came third with 7.56.

Murphy also claimed second in the over-30 grade, his score of 8.90 being edged by Buck Woods.

Alexis Owen and Tessa Gabbott both showed the future is bright for Dunedin on the waves too.

They won the under-14 boys and girls titles respectively, with score of 13.33 and 7.70.

Owen put on a similarly strong display in the under-16 grade, although his score of 10.94 was beaten by a stunning 17.20 from Tao Mouldey.
