In years gone by, Gemma Lowther spent months perfecting one-handed planches and other gravity-defying moves for her routines at World Aerobics Championships.

This month, the 30-year-old will be striking a more scrutinising pose from behind a desk, as a judge at the Federation International of Sport and Fitness World Aerobics Championships in Vienna, Austria.

The former Dunedin sport aerobics athlete, who now lives in Wellington,  has been a multiple New Zealand national aerobics champion and represented the country at world championships in 2004 and 2007.

"So it will be exciting to be on the other side of the fence in Vienna."

Ms Lowther has been judging for about a decade, and has become a New Zealand Competitive Aerobics Federation head judge.

Since becoming an internationally qualified judge, she has dreamed of judging a world championship, she said.

"It’s something I’ve been wanting to do. It was definitely a goal to judge at an international event, especially once I got internationally qualified.

"I’ve judged the Australian national championships for the last couple of years. That’s a huge event and they have a lot of world champions."

Ms Lowther said she would be one of eight judges on the world championships judging panel.

About 200 of the world’s top sport aerobics and hip hop competitors were expected to compete at the World Championships.

The four-day event starts on October 18.

Ms Lowther hoped to make contacts during the World Championships, with the aim of being invited to judge on other international panels in Europe.

She planned to move to London following the competition, to take up any offers.
