New Zealand's quest for a medal in the three-day event got off to a decent start with Jonelle Richards and Flintstar incurring 56.50 penalty points in the dressage.

Richards, called up for her first Olympics in place of Clarke Johnstone whose three horses were all injured, made only one mistake with the extended canter when Flintstar panicked. Richards did well to keep him under control for the rest of the test in the Greenwich Park arena considering how nervous her mount looked.

Richards' score placed her sixth of the 13 riders so far.

Jonathan Paget (Clifton Promise) is due to go tomorrow morning (NZT) with Caroline Powell (Lenamore), Andrew Nicholson (Nereo) and Mark Todd (Campino) set to ride in the second day of dressage tomorrow night (NZT).

The scores from the top three riders from each country count towards the team's event. The top riders, who all go tomorrow, will aim for a score under 40 to be in contention in the individual competition.
