Dunedin swimmer Erika Fairweather has been confirmed for her first Commonwealth Games.

The 18-year-old freestyler was selected in the New Zealand team of 12 for the Birmingham Games, which begin on July 28.

Fairweather will swim in the 100m, 200m and 400m women’s freestyle.

She made the final at last year’s Tokyo Olympics in the longest of those distances and should be among the medal contenders in Birmingham.

Paralympic champion Sophie Pascoe is also part of the team, set to swim in the women’s 100m freestyle S9.

Lewis Clareburt, who will swim in the 200m and 400m men’s individual medley, as well as the 200m freestyle, is also among the medal hopes.

Swimming New Zealand chief executive Steve Johns was delighted with the squad.

"The team has a good mix of experience and debutants, being led by 2018 Gold Coast double gold medallist Sophie Pascoe and bronze medallist Lewis Clareburt, with seven swimmers making their Commonwealth Games debuts," Johns said.

"It’s been a difficult couple of years for all our swimmers with their international campaigns being impacted by Covid.

"The team selected has shown remarkable resilience and deserve their places and the opportunity to represent New Zealand at this pinnacle international event."

Fairweather will also compete at the world championships in Budapest, which are to be held a month before the Games.
