St  Clair's Andrew McMillan can retire a happy man.

The Black Fins captain has led his team to another world championship victory after claiming the title in the Netherlands yesterday.

It backs up wins in Adelaide in 2012 and in France in 2014.

The team of 12 was led by McMillan, who had previously said he would be heading into retirement at the end of the championships.

McMillan (31), who has swum at the Olympics, is based in Auckland and is a teacher and swim coach. He still represents St Clair.

The New Zealand team sealed its win with eight medals on the final day of competition.

It is the first time New Zealand has won three consecutive world titles.

The team was the top performer in the pool and was also dominant when the championships moved to the beach.

The Black Fins finished with 881 points, ahead of Australia on 792 points and France in third on 599 points.

Andy McMillan said he was ecstatic.

``We've been dreaming of this day and we've taken it one step at a time. We thought about taking over back in 2012 and we've had this core belief of believing that we've got the ability to do it and we've never stopped believing and the last three world championships has shown it,'' he said.

``We're stoked that we've been able to come up with the victory in the last three.''
